LEWIS, Matthew Gregory.
Journal of a residence among the negroes in the West Indies.
London, John Murray, 1845. Later half cloth. VIII,184; 16 pp. First edition. - Although opportunely printed in the year of emancipation, this work really comprises the journals of two earlier residences in Jamaica, in 1815-1816 and in 1817, respectively. It is, therefore, an interesting document dealing with the state of the island after the abolition of the slave trade and before the freeing of the blacks. ... Lewis fell heir to two Jamacan estates and visited them twice, as above stated, but died of yellow fever at sea on returning home in 1818. The author's viewpoint is that of a cultured English gentleman who has a sincere if somewhat misguided interest in the welfare of negroes who have suddenly become his property. The work shows the crying evils of absentee landlordism even when the owner was the best type, as Lewis unquestionably was (Ragatz p.227). Sabin 40821; Afro-Americana 5836.

LEWIS, MATTHEW GREGORY
The Monk
London, Folio Society. 1984, First Thus. Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Ill.: Tute, George. An As New unmarked copy in black cloth boards with Cockerell marbled sides. 312 pages. Wood engravings by George Tute. The Monk is a Gothic novel , published in 1796 in three volumes. Written early in Lewis's career, it was published before he turned twenty, and he withheld his name from the first edition. It tells the story of a virtuous monk, Ambrosio, who gives into his lustful urges, setting off a chain of events that leave him damned. It is a prime example of the type of Gothic that specializes in horror. Upon publication, the novel proved scandalous. Readers were shocked by its sexually explicit content, and themes of rape and incest, leading it to become arguably the most controversial Gothic novel of the 18th century. There was public outcry, but the novel was hugely popular. As New/As New.

The Monk: A Romance
London, Benjamin Franklin, 1837. Cloth. A neatly illustrated edition of this Gothic novel by Matthew Gregory Lewis. Scarce edition. First published in 1796. With six folding plates including the frontispiece. Title page states seven plates, but the work is vanishingly scarce so collation unavailable. The work is presented in the publisher's cloth, with no evidence of plate removal. Following the corruption and downfall of the monk Ambrosio, this work is a prime example of the male Gothic. Often imitated and adapted for the stage and screen, the convoluted and scandalous plot has made this one of the most important Gothic horror novel of its time. Written by Matthew Gregory Lewis, an English novelist and dramatist who specialized in Gothic Horror. He was also known for his work as a diplomat, politician and estate owner in Jamaica. In the original green cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light shelf wear to the extremities. Minor rubbing to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with light age toning to the extremities. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .

LEWIS (Matthew Gregory):
Tales of Wonder. Written and Collected by M. G. Lewis, Esq. M. P.
Dublin Printed by Nicholas Kelly, for P. Wogan; Printed by William Porter for P. Wogan, 1801. FIRST DUBLIN EDITION. 2 volumes in 1. Large, tall 8vo, 213 X 132, pp. [iv], 220; [iv], 224, bound in blue binder's cloth, blocked in gilt on spine; title-page volume 1 slightly torn at lower margin, occasional spotting of text, top of spine snagged. Lewis (1775 - 1818) never had quite the success with his other literary endeavours as he had in 1796 with The Monk. These "tales" are ballads in verse, not prose. Scott apparently postponed publishing his own collection of ballads upon hearing that this work was in press, in a letter to James Ballantyne 22 April 1800. Scott, however, contributed three tales to the first volume, and Lewis solicited contributions from other authors, including Southey, as well. The work was often alluded to as "Tales of Plunder" due to its large paper size and the price of one guinea. Todd and Bowden 7Aa.
